The following list of the most common types of motorcycles provides a good starting point to help you decide what kind of bike you should look into based on your riding needs.

Motorcycle Categories and Types

Motorcycles are great, and they can facilitate getting around in the city or even traveling at a lower cost when compared to other vehicles. However, not all motorcycles are designed to provide the same type of riding experience. Some provide a higher level of comfort while others are focused on greater thrills. That is why there are so many types of bikes in today's market. Each type is designed to provide the rider with a more personal experience and the right specifications for the use they need. Today we want to share some information on some of the most common types of motorcycles so you can get a better idea of what's out there.

Motorcycle Engine Types: Two-Stroke and Four-Stroke

Most motorcycles nowadays are four-stroke. In fact, there are very few two-stroke motorcycles being manufactured due to the pollution they cause. Although newer models contaminate less, they still tend to be much less common today. Dirt bikes are the most common motorcycles that are still manufactured with two-stroke engines. For everyday use, though, almost all bikes have a four-stroke engine.

The Most Common Motorcycle Categories

  • Cruiser bikes. These are the traditional American riding machines that many have grown to love. The most common cruisers are Harley-Davidsons. Choppers are a type of cruiser bike that has been modified, and these are quite common.  Although cruiser bikes tend to be very popular, they can provide some disadvantages. For one, not everyone finds them comfortable. Their high handle bars are not exactly comfortable after long hours of riding and reaching higher speeds. Because of this, they can tire out the rider quite quickly. Still, these type of bikes will remain quite popular with experienced riders.
  • Sports bikes. These bikes are made for full speed handling and good, strong grip on paved roads. However, all the high power and the full speeds that sports bike reach usually mean higher fuel consumption and less comfort. Sports bikes are made to have a strong and powerful engine and a lightweight frame. They have high footpegs and their handlebars are higher up so that you need to lean forward. This position is fine at high speeds where the wind is helping carry your weight but isn't so comfortable when riding at lower speeds. Most sports bikes also have a windscreen that helps to deflect the wind at high speeds.
  • Off-road. Off road bikes are commonly called dirt bikes. These are created for non-paved roads, rocky trails, and more dirt-like terrain. These are equipped with better suspension and thicker, higher wheels to withstand the roughness of the road. It isn't difficult to find two-stroke dirt bikes as much as it is to find this type of motor in regular street motorcycles, but it is important that you know how to take good care of your engine. AMSOIL has the best two-stroke and four-stroke motorcycle oil for your dirt bike. • Standard motorcycle. Everyday use motorcycles are known as naked bikes or roadsters. These are more general-use motorcycles and a great option if you have never owned a bike. Their medium sized structure and less specialized frame make them quite versatile and a non-expensive option. These bikes are usually easier to handle and manage within the city. They also tend to be pretty fuel efficient.
